23 Kayla

Kayla Jennings stared hard at Mark Pellegro as he chewed.

He glared back at her, all innocent.

“What?” he said, muffled around meat. “You really think I’m going to In-N-Out fucking Burger and not doin’ some animal style?”

“How can you eat after driving around in upchuck-mobile all morning?”

He didn’t answer, simply chewed exaggeratedly, open-mouthed, in her direction.

“Just hurry up, you fuckin’ weirdo.”

“Hey, I’m not really in a rush to see your boyfriend right now,” he said. “Why’d you tell him I brought that girl here?”

“Because you did.” She felt her eyes go big and incredulous.

“You—you made it sound like I fucked him over! Like I was her getaway driver or something. I didn’t know she stole something from him, Jesus Christ!”

“That’s none of your business.”

“The hell it is!” He took an angry bite of burger. “You made it my business when you practically sicced him on me. Now he’s gonna be all up in my shit! Everything was going great before last night. He was giving me more hours, more responsibilities, running orders and shit, and now everything sucks! Thanks!” He mouthed a wad of fries, then punctuated his outburst with, “Fuck!”

Kayla practically never went to Tommy’s stupid store, didn’t want to be a part of all that sketchy shit, but the two of them would sometimes joke about how deeply into Tommy’s colon Mark could reach. The dude was harmless enough, and according to Tommy there was no doubt he was the best salesman on the floor, but she’d always found him a little strange—the way he carried himself, the way he talked. Frankly, seeing him mad about the girl’s spew spoiling his Jetta’s interior was sorta refreshing. Like, she was really seeing him for the first time, rather than the insufferable suckup he usually was.

She watched him chew some more.

As she did so, she pondered her options. It’d been nearly twenty minutes since she’d launched herself from the vomit-mobile and rushed the In-N-Out order window to talk with three paper-hatted teens, asking after the blue-spangly girl, had they seen anyone like that in the parking lot, like early this morning, way early. The teenage buffoons had merely stared open-mouthed at one another. A few crew members on the morning shift had already left, they said, but no, huh-uh, they didn’t remember anyone like that, nope. Fucking teens, man.

It was that quick, and now Kayla was back to having nothing.

She stared east down Westminster Boulevard, thinking. She’d been so sure about coming here. She’d had this grand vision of finding the girl, huddled up in front of the burger joint where Mark had left her, clutching Tommy’s stupid coins to her tits. Grabbing hold of her and dragging her ass back to the house and making everything right again, making Tommy happy again. But shit, when did anything ever go easy in Kayla’s life?

“We can still find that bitch,” she said.

Mark shook his head. “Whatever.”

“Where’s she gonna go?” She turned to focus on him, stole one of his fries. “She’s probably still walking home.
