23 Kayla
Kayla Jennings stared hard at Mark Pellegro as he chewed.
He glared back at her, all innocent.
âWhat?â he said, muffled around meat. âYou really think Iâm going to In-N-Out fucking Burger and not doinâ some animal style?â
âHow can you eat after driving around in upchuck-mobile all morning?â
He didnât answer, simply chewed exaggeratedly, open-mouthed, in her direction.
âJust hurry up, you fuckinâ weirdo.â
âHey, Iâm not really in a rush to see your boyfriend right now,â he said. âWhyâd you tell him I brought that girl here?â
âBecause you did.â She felt her eyes go big and incredulous.
âYouâyou made it sound like I fucked him over! Like I was her getaway driver or something. I didnât know she stole something from him, Jesus Christ!â
âThatâs none of your business.â
âThe hell it is!â He took an angry bite of burger. âYou made it my business when you practically sicced him on me. Now heâs gonna be all up in my shit! Everything was going great before last night. He was giving me more hours, more responsibilities, running orders and shit, and now everything sucks! Thanks!â He mouthed a wad of fries, then punctuated his outburst with, âFuck!â
Kayla practically never went to Tommyâs stupid store, didnât want to be a part of all that sketchy shit, but the two of them would sometimes joke about how deeply into Tommyâs colon Mark could reach. The dude was harmless enough, and according to Tommy there was no doubt he was the best salesman on the floor, but sheâd always found him a little strangeâthe way he carried himself, the way he talked. Frankly, seeing him mad about the girlâs spew spoiling his Jettaâs interior was sorta refreshing. Like, she was really seeing him for the first time, rather than the insufferable suckup he usually was.
She watched him chew some more.
As she did so, she pondered her options. Itâd been nearly twenty minutes since sheâd launched herself from the vomit-mobile and rushed the In-N-Out order window to talk with three paper-hatted teens, asking after the blue-spangly girl, had they seen anyone like that in the parking lot, like early this morning, way early. The teenage buffoons had merely stared open-mouthed at one another. A few crew members on the morning shift had already left, they said, but no, huh-uh, they didnât remember anyone like that, nope. Fucking teens, man.
It was that quick, and now Kayla was back to having nothing.
She stared east down Westminster Boulevard, thinking. Sheâd been so sure about coming here. Sheâd had this grand vision of finding the girl, huddled up in front of the burger joint where Mark had left her, clutching Tommyâs stupid coins to her tits. Grabbing hold of her and dragging her ass back to the house and making everything right again, making Tommy happy again. But shit, when did anything ever go easy in Kaylaâs life?
âWe can still find that bitch,â she said.
Mark shook his head. âWhatever.â
âWhereâs she gonna go?â She turned to focus on him, stole one of his fries. âSheâs probably still walking home.
